    Another Early Isaac Hayes Recording

This is an update to an iReport entitled Isaac and The Playboys posted at this site on August 10th. It tells the story of six, young boys from north Mississippi and a 1963 (maybe early 1964) recording session at the American Studio in Memphis where they were joined by a tall, slender, for the most part unknown, Isaac Hayes with a full head of hair. For the full story, refer to the August 10th post.

During that wonderful night, of which I was a part, playing trumpet, we cut covers of two sides: What Am I Living For and Howlin' Wolf's (Willie Dixon's) Spoonful. There is guitar, bass, drums, trumpet, tenor sax, baritone sax and Isaac on the organ. We made a 45rpm record, but as far as I know, it was never released. Six copies were sent to The Playboys. I know where three are. I have one. The two cuts on this 45 have got to be among the earliest recordings of Isaac around. They are certainly two of the earliest, practically NEVER heard recordings around!

The folks at iReport suggested that Isaac fans might like to hear these early recordings, and suggested I post them. Because of file size, it will be necessary for me to make two posts, one for What Am I Living For and one for Spoonful.

Hope you enjoy them. They are a very special memory to the five remaining members of The Playboys.

Isaac just happened by the American Studio that night, as far as I know. The producer knew him, and asked us if he could join in the session. We were all about 17 years old so Isaac would have been approximately 21. Even at that early age, his grace, charm, knowledge and marvelous musical abilities were evident. He orchestrated the evening, and made an everlasting, indelible mark on the hearts of six, young boys from north Mississippi.
