    MOROCCO goes Heavy Metal

In June, I had a chance to see a Moroccan Heavy Metal band called Lazywall, perform at a concert in Casablanca Morocco. The UK based band had recently moved back to Morocco to record their first album. I have attached an mp3 song for you to listen because I want to share with those who ever wondered what a cross between Heavy Metal and Arabic music would sound like...you are in for a surprise. During the show, Lazywall played a couple of songs with Mark Levine, a guest guitar player, author of the book Heavy Metal Islam. He is a leader of the new generation of historians and analysts of the modern Middle East and Islam. As a musician he has recorded, performed and toured all over the world with artists including Mick Jagger, Chuck D, Michael Franti, Dr. John, Ozomatli, Hassan Hakmoun, blues greats Johnny Copeland and Albert Collins, world music artists Sara Alexander and al-Andalus, and numerous R&B and hiphop acts. he writes: "I've just spent five years working on a book on the heavy metal scenes across the Muslim world, so I'm partial to that part of the world. I was shocked when I first discovered these scenes, but I quickly realized that some of the best bands around today or playing in relative obscurityat least vis-a-vis the American music scenein Morocco, Egypt, Iran, Pakistan and even Saudi Arabia. Not only have they mastered the classic sounds of Scandinavian, British and American metal, they've brought in their indigenous sounds and even instruments to create new strains of rock, such as "oriental death metal" or "Sufi rock" that are among the most innovative styles of music today."
