    Torture and public humiliation to extract confession in Iran

     

    Vajiollah Golpour, a 71-year old Bahai from the village of Safrabad-Sari in Mazandaran province, was arrested by security forces on April 28. Following his interrogation and torture he was led around the city of Tenakabon in shackles for two and a half hours, by security officials, in order to humiliate him.The purpose was to extract a confession. The charges are not known, but Bahais in Iran are commonly accused of being spies for foreign powers, even Bahais who have no possible access to anything of interest to foreign powers.

     

    Bahais form Iran's largest religius minority, and are severely persecuted by the government, as well as suffering vandalism on their homes, places of business and cemeteries by shadowy groups. See :
