    Your prom dress memories

    More from Martrese

Molly Ringwald had NOTHING on me!

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Martrese says she describes fashion styles of the 1980s as 'hideous' now, but is and was proud of all the accessories and creations she made at the time, especially this prom dress. Even her date's bow tie and cumerbund were made from the turquoise fabric of her dress, which she still has. She says: 'I spent most of my high school and college years making dresses and other outfits. (I made Hawaiian shirts for all the guys on our high school color guard.) The Senior Prom was my Pièce de résistance - everything was turquoise blue and silver - even silver nail polish.'
    - nsaidi, CNN iReport producer

1986 - My maternal grandmother was a seamstress at the now-closed Bonwit Teller department store in nearby Jenkintown, PA. I came up with the design, she directed me with my execution. I also crafted a matching handbag, gloves, and made rosetts for my shoes. In hindsight, I was a mashup of Scarlett O'Hara and Ziggy Stardust, but at the time, I felt spec-TAC-u-lar. Sister Joan Claire blurted out, as I ascended the escalator at the Adams Mark Hotel, "Martrese, I expected nothing less."
