    Seventies Prom Flashback

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     patty1955 says she had a real corsage that she saved for a while, and she and her date went to a steakhouse for dinner. She then departed for the prom at the school, where there was a band and dancing. She had to be home by 1 a.m. for her curfew. She says her perspective on the 1970s sense of style changed over time. 'I loved it at the time, but years later I laughed along with my sisters at some of the clothes we wore. I think the style has endured. All styles seem to come back around.' She thanks her Dad for making prom night special for all the girls.

The year was 1972. I lived in a small town in Kentucky. The nearest dress shop was in Louisville. My father took me shopping for a dress and accessories, just as he did with all my sisters. We didn't have a lot of money back then. There were 5 children in the family.  "Daddy" was not your average father. He always took us to shop for our clothes. While most girls shopped with their mother, I felt special having my Dad. I didn't have anything in mind for prom. I just wanted something beautiful. When my Dad suggested this yellow dress, I knew it was the one.   He said it would look good with my dark hair. His opinion mattered the most!  I got matching shoes. It cost $60, a lot of money at that time! I wore white gloves and a yellow daisy corsage. My sister did my hair. It was a magical night. My date was sweet and I felt like a Princess. I give my Dad the credit for making the night special. He passed away two years ago at age 91. He had the gift of making each one of his children feel like they were his favorite. That night it was me. I cherish the memory of my Prom and of Daddy helping me chose my dress.
