    Joplin, Mo., tornado damage

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     ryanat, a sports writer for the Joplin Globe, was at work when the tornado hit. He and another reporter ventured over to St. John's Regional Medical Center within an hour of the tornado and were shocked to see all the devastation. Across the street from the hospital, you see hundreds of damaged homes in the video. 'I was in disbelief. I’ve lived in this area of Midwest my whole life. You grow up with tornado warnings and confirmed funnel touchdowns all the time, but this time it struck home. We were just expecting some damage, maybe some trees down, but when we drove up on that area, it was just shock.'
    - zdan, CNN iReport producer

Taken by Ryan Atkinson of the Joplin Globe, shortly after the storm ripped through Joplin.

The building in the distance is St. John's Regional Medical Center. Across the street, hundreds of homes are leveled.
