Tornado season |
Ham radio active in Springfield Mass
6/1/11 10:45pm report
As tornadoes ripped through southern Massachusetts on the night of June 1, Amateur Radio operators were active in providing spotting reports to the National Weather Service.
SKYWARN nets were held in Connecticut and Massachusetts providing timely reports to NWS offices in Albany and Taunton.
When tornadoes touched down in Springfield, STEFAN RODOWICZ, N1SR, reported that RACES hams were at the Springfield EOC and the Worchester County EOC.
Using the call of WC1MAC (Region 3 RACES) they coordinated through the Mt. Tom repeater and provided communications for shelters at Mass Mutual, Brimfield and Munson.
Meanwhuile, across town, ARES DEC Tom Doyle, N1MUV, held the fort at the Springfield American Red Cross.
At 9:30 pm Tom reported that there had apparently been several touchdowns in the region and normal communications was "ragged but coming back."
Much of the area was still without power or landline phones.
I spoke with Stefan and Tom - they are doing fine. They hope to stand down with the dawn.
