Escorting a snapping turtle across the road to safety
- jmsaba, CNN iReport producer
I saw a snapping turtle in an area where I've seen them before, as there is a stream to a lake that passes underneath the road.
I really like turtles.
Although I was shy and sensitive growing up, and cried at my first boy scout meeting, filling me with shame that I never went back, there is a boy scout within me. My counselors tell me that I have a, "good heart," whatever that means. I do know that when I drive back from Bangor at night, I drive at 35 miles an hour, the last 25 miles, on rural route 169, so I do NOT run over the animals.
What surprised me is that the man in the white van did not know it was a snapping turtle, which tells me he's not from Maine. I've lived here for eight years, but did not recognize the strange call of a vixen fox, calling for it's mate, on my property at 3 am. Always some interesting nature to watch in Maine.
