    Botanical gardens in Tbilisi

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Mekliani says, 'I was impressed. There's a lot of new, but they are keeping a lot of old as well. The idea that the government is trying to create a western style world, doesn't really translate. I gather they are fusing the past of Georgia (not Soviet Union), with its future.'
    - nsaidi, CNN iReport producer

I had a pleasure of visiting the Botanical Gardens in Tbilisi Georgia.
I was told Georgians take pride in the Botanical Garden, and take extra care to preserve and protect it. It occupies the area of 161 hectares and possesses a collection of over 4,500 taxonomic groups. I was told that during both wars with Russia, Botanical Gardens had armed soldiers standing ready to defend it.
We parked the car by the Turkish Baths and walked up to the entrance of the Gardens.
The walk wasn't too long, but it was steep.
There was a water fountain at  the entrance, and I was so thirsty I decided to use it. Here's what I found:
Drinking water is amazing in Georgia, and it is their most amazing natural resource. Even from the public water fountain water tastes better than any bottled water in the States.
We took our time, I took many pictures, while walking up to the top of the Gardens. Throughout the entire walk up, I didn't see one candy wrapper or a can of soda discarded anywhere. The place was spotless. There were visitors but they seemed to be locals. An occasional english speaking person would walk past us taking photos, but otherwise it was all Georgians. When we got to the top of the Gardens there was a family wrapping up their lunch. The picked up every little crumb of their garbage.
It seems like there was if not reverence, then respect  for the Gardens.
The smallest member of our group had her heart set on climbing one of the trees, and I am sure she wasn't supposed to, but they perched her on for a moment and took her off as she giggled. The Gardens themselves were beautiful. A perfect place for an impressionistic painting or two.
The view down from the gardens was amazing as well. Even the clouds were creating their own beautiful landscape. All in all, perfect place to visit and relax form the daily hustle and bustle. It's quiet, it's free and it's absolutely gorgeous.
