Cattle rustling, ethnic tension in Africa's newest nation

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     JaredFerrie says, 'I was in Southern Sudan reporting on the referendum and researching a report. I wanted to try making a video story, so I did this as a practice run.The video focuses on a cattle rustling attack that killed one man and injured another. There is a lot of tension between ethnic groups in Southern Sudan. Herders from different tribes often fight over access to water or grazing land, and they often steal each other's cattle. This attack occurred just days before the independence referendum, which will see a new country emerge on July 9.'
    - Cortnee H, CNN iReport producer

As Southern Sudan prepares to declare independence on July 9, it faces a host of challenges including poverty, tribal tensions and violence. This story ties together those themes by focusing on a cattle rustling attack in a remote region, which left one man dead and another injured. The attack happened just days after Southern Sudan voted overwhelmingly to separate from the north
