Bangkok's Saen Saeb Canal Taxi Makes a Splash
The Bangkok Canal Boat Taxi which operates along the 18 km of Khlong Saen Saeb is a cheap and fascinating way to zip across the capital avoiding all traffic jams and soaking up (sometimes literally) the unique energy of this effervescent city.
100 boats, each seating 50, splash their way between Bang Kapi and Phan Fah Bridge between 05.30 and 20.30. When the boat whooshes in alongside the pier you have to get your leg over the side pretty smartish and plop onto a bench or stand firm at the back otherwise you’ll be swept off your feet. Not for the faint-hearted or doddery… but if they can manage it, what a buzz!
Much of this video was taken around the pier at Thong Lor Road and across the canal beneath the arches of the overhead U-turn where street vendors, romantic couples and a man knitting on his back in a deckchair all add to the local color of this great waterway. Oh yes, and there's footage on board, belting along through the spray amongst monks and candy floss.
