Guitar Hero, or Hero on Guitar?
I have to admit, I got hooked a little at a new year's eve party several years ago when Guitar Hero had first come out. It was fun, and with the drinking I had been doing was about the only way I could play guitar at the time (we did try a jam session that night and I learned I cannot play when drinking). It was fun, but I have to admit nothing like really playing.
Fast forward three years, Guitar Hero 2 or is it 3 now? Friend buys the game, invites me over and I cannot play the thing to save my life (guess I needed more tequila). He is cajoling me about being a guitar player and why he is handing me my lunch on the game ("I thought you were a guitar player", he said). I was actually getting irritated at the game, but I still loved the music. Nothing like playing a real guitar, fun yes, but learning nothing. I like to learn and would love to see this thing help people become real guitar heroes.
Now, I do play guitar on a regular basis. I am no guitar hero, nor can I shred the neck up and down and I still consider myself a student of the instrument as I marvel at how simple yet complex the relationships of the strings are. I can play, and fairly well, but still enjoy my anonimity in the safety of my living room. I do not see the point in Guitar Hero for me, but if it makes the youth of our gereration desire to love and appreciate the instrument and the music of our past then all the better. Maybe it will inspire the next SRV or Jimmy Hendrix to pickup the instrument and learn how to make the sounds they are playing on Video.
Guitar Hero, please think about a way to start making heroes of the guitar. I know this has to be possible and what youngster would love to learn without realizing what they are doing by playing the instrument along with the game? Until then, I guess I will settle for having a good music track to play along with.
As far as the hero on guitar behind Guitar Hero, I am glad you took the time to learn the guitar. You rock MAN! And you are bringing back a lot of desire and good feelings beyond what you ever dreamed of when you signed the deal to be the Guitar Hero behind the game.
