This iReport is part of an assignment:
Iceland: Ethereal island in Europe
Iceland USAF Base Circa 1955
Here are the photos of the old U.S. Air Force Base in Iceland and the men who served there in the 57th Fighter Interceptor Squadron back in the years 1955 and 1956. Del Oxford is one of those men. He served 33 years with the Air Force both there in Iceland for a year and later in Charleston, SC, where he retired. He says that he had a great career and that he "could never be so lucky again." He showed me these with a whole lot of pride and rightly so. One of the photos has a double rainbow aside the aircraft. The base closed down about two years ago, but I am sure that the impact which our servicemen had there long ago will last the test of time.
