This iReport is part of an assignment:
Fall of the Berlin Wall |
Berlin - Behind the Wall
The Colorado Air National Guard flew special missions into Berlin during the Cold War. This required flying the very precise Berlin Corridor to Tempelhof Airport. Once in Berlin you could actually visit East Berlin on the "other" side of the wall but you were required to wear your uniform otherwise you were assumed to be a spy. We passed through Checkpoint Charlie. The guard with rifle in the background of one photo was either East German or Soviet but definitely not friendly. Suprisingly, we were instructed if stopped by the East German police that we were to ask to speak to one of our Russian "Allies" as the entire city was still considered occupied as a result of WWII.
