Story Behind the Photo - Playful Dolphin and Warship

After editing and finalizing this photo, I remembered the quick story behind it and wanted to share.

While engaged in ongoing military operations in the vicinity of Libya during Operation Odyssey Dawn, we spent many hours floating around the Mediterranean Sea waiting for something to happen.

After waking up early every morning to capture the beautiful sunrises, along with the many daily operations onboard the USS MOUNT WHITNEY, I always had my camera at the ready.  When someone told me about the large school of dolphins jumping and playing alongside our ship, I had to check it out.

I walked up to the bow (front of the ship) to get a better view of the dolphin.  I noticed one who kept swimming under the ship, then quickly surfacing, jumping out of the water, and repeating.  The only way I could get a shot of him was to literally lean over the bull nose of the ship.  So, willing to risk almost anything for an awesome shot, I securely anchored myself to a sturdy pole, jimmied myself over the deck, half of my body literally off the ship, and began to shoot away.

All I brought on the ship was my trusty Nikon D90 and 3M fixed lens.  I began shooting burst shots whenever I saw the dolphin jump.  After 100 or so photos, the playful dolphin finally joined the rest of his buddies off to
the side.  I quickly (and very carefully) maneuvered my way back on to the safety of the ship, and began to review my shots.  I knew right away I had a winner when I saw the LCD Preview.  After rotating the view 180 degrees in post-processing and cropping away some water, this was the result.  I hope you enjoy!
