Ocean Waves before Hurricane Irene Passes by New Smyrna Beach, Florida

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     relaxingpian shot this video of stormy surf off New Smyrna Beach, Florida, as Hurricane Irene passed through the region. 'I was just amazed at how rough the ocean was today knowing that the storm was over 260 miles away from us,' he said. 'I've never seen it that rough before and I've never seen waves like I did today.'
    - jmsaba, CNN iReport producer

Video taken around 2pm EST on August 25, 2011, at Canaveral National Seashore near New Smyrna Beach, Florida.  Normally the water does not extend this far on to the dune but today it was washing all the way in. High tide was not until 6:22pm.

It was difficult to steady myself taking this video as the winds were pretty strong and kept pushing me around.

Hurricane Irene was still over 260 miles from this point and yet the waves were very strong and high.  I estimated some of the waves to be at least 6 feet if not closer to 10 feet.

The water was washing on to shore where the turltle nests were so that isn't good for the turtles.

You could feel and see the power of the ocean just watching the waves.  Because of the salt mist, visibility was greatly reduced.  The air was very heavy and tropical making it hard to breathe.
