    Irene Boardwalk damage at New Jersey Shore

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     MikeBlack took photos and videos Sunday, August 28. He described what he saw: 'Lots of sand erosion from wind and surf. The boardwalks in several towns were damaged, lots of flooding around lakes near the ocean.'

    Power is still out for many in Monmouth County, New Jersey USA where these were taken.

     

    Many New Jersey coastal towns, including Spring Lake, had mandatory evacuations the day before.

     

    Police were out and not allowing anyone on the boardwalks, or dunes, as some were near collapse. Traffic was heavy to see the aftermath, many came to look at the damage and the large waves churned up by the storm.

     

    The concrete pilings seen in many of the photos say WPA 1939  [Works Progress Administration]. These have survived every storm since they were built. The boardwalk has been destroyed before, but the concrete pilings remain.
