Proposed amendments to the Civil Service Act is An obstruction to democracy and Human Rights

Dhivehi Observer, (Maldives) - Seven local NGOs on Monday released a joint statement against the proposed amendments to Civil service Act promulgated by the Peoples Majilis last year. Maldives Dictator proposed radical changes to the bill even before the Commission began its official functions. NGOs say that its an obstruction to democracy and human rights and have launched an online campaign against the proposals. The press release said that "the Civil Services act was a key milestone in the road to reform in ushering in 21st century modern democracy into the Maldives. It is indeed saddening and disheartening to know that the recent amendments proposed by the Government to the Civil service Act is in fact a step backward in its commitment and is a total disregard to the Government's previous statements, that it will hold civil servants accountable to the Parliament." The press release also said that if these proposals become law it could easily pave way for an unfair and an unaccountable election at a time when the whole country is gearing up for an historic first multi-party presidential election in 2008. The group of seven local NGOs, Strength of Society, Open Society Association, Empowering Movement, Maldives Aid, Maldivian Detainee Network, Rights for All, Society for Women Against Drugs, calls on the government to withdraw the proposals immediately. A facebook group 'Against the proposed amendments to Civil service Act' has been launched to gain support for this campaign. click here to join the group
