Obama selects Biden |
How Will Obama Get His Base on Board?
Still smarting from the decision of Barack Obama to exclude Hillary from his team, I have to question who exactly are the 'WE" his slogan refers to? Was it not nearly a 50% divide in the base of his party for who should lead?
I know there are people who will say "oh she's a republican stirring the pot", or "she's a racist and would have never supported Obama in the first place". If you really think that- please, look me up on the Salina Journal and WEblog Wichita Eagle forums under both this name, and the name political_mama for the past 8 years. Do a search back when Obama first announced. Do a search for racism and my ID. You will find that even after Obama beat out Hillary, still hurt- but still in support of Obama. I felt he could not POSSIBLY disregard half of us. The ones who have fought the good fight since B. Clinton was in office. The ones who have taken Bush to task every conniving step of the way. We ARE the base of this party.
I have had many conversations with people over the years on how wasting a vote on principle is a vote for the opposition, and that you have got to vote for the one who is most likely to win. I don't know if I can bring myself to do it this time. Consider that if me and a number of my friends who are this involved and aware of politics- that we make it a daily mission to fight for what is right- imagine the supporters who were NOT that into it- who vote- but don't really pay close attention- if we're that expendable- how many truly are this angry to withhold our vote from Obama? Then add the ones who really will not vote because of his race- to whom I say good riddance anyway. Seriously, did some dems not get the memo long ago that we're not the party of racism since...the 60's?
When it comes down to it, and I'm standing in that voting booth- will I truly hold my nose and pray that Obama won't continue to throw me and my friends under the bus? Or will I write in the person who I know truly represents and fights for me as much as I fight for her-knowing that it is a vote for McSame?
I love Biden, he would have been my pick for the VP behind Obama had Hillary won. He's a good democrat and always has been. This isn't about Biden. Biden rocked last night with his speech.
Obama is going to have to do a few things before he gets my vote- he's going to have to explain to me why he was willing to divide and shut out half the party...on what HE wanted vs what WE wanted. He's going to have to knock off the preachy talk. He's going to have to do a better job of explaining his direction in the war. And he's going to have to make an absolute committment to bringing equality to all people- including gays.
He could have easily had my vote and 18 million others-easily. Now I do not trust him and he's going to have to earn it back.
