New Orleans Begins to Say Goodbye to Archbishop Hannan

On Thursday, September 29, 2011 former Archbishop of New Orleans Philip Hannan passed away at the age of 98.  He had served as archbishop for 23 years from 1965-1988.  Prior to coming to New Orleans, he was known for delivering the eulogy at President John F Kennedy Jr.'s funeral.  On Monday, October 3, 2011, his body arrived at Notre Dame Seminary to begin a 3-day visitation open to the public.  The hearse was greeted by one bagpiper and clergy from all across New Orleans, including former archbishops, Cardinal Egan of New York and current Archbishop Gregory Aymond.  Also in attendance was Saints owner Tom Benson and his wife.  There was a short prayer service before the public was allowed in for the viewing.  I did not feel comfortable taking any pictures inside of the body.  The archbishop's body will lie in state until Wednesday when he will then be moved by horse-drawn carriage to the St Loius Cathedral, where his funeral and burial will take place.
