Are you a slavery-free consumer? |
Slavery Free Products How Can We Be Sure
After learning about this assignment, I walked around my house looking for things that I could be sure were slavery free products. I found lots of "made in the USA" items. But, does that really mean they were slavery free? Do I know who chopped down the tree that made my china cabinet? Do I know where the beads were made or who made them that are on my arts and crafts necklace that I bought from a boutique? Am I sure the avocado seed that grew my 70 year old avocado tree wasn't picked by a slave? Am I also sure about the kumquts, lemons, limes, oranges and tomatoes? My answer to these questions is no, I really don't know and will never have a way of knowing for sure. The only thing I can be sure of is that the fruits and vegetables growing in my backyard have been slavery free for the last 22 years that I have lived here. Slavery and human trafficing must stop. Wow, this assignment really woke me up and made me think!!
