    Halloween - Florida Style

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     cynthiafalar says her home looks like the Great Pumpkin threw up on her lawn but she doesn't care: she decorates for herself and her son. Her family in the Midwest would think it sacrilege to use plastic pumpkins, but in Florida, it makes sense. "If you carve the pumpkin, in a matter of days, with the heat and humidity, it breaks down so quickly, so it's actually more practical to plug in a plastic pumpkin." The big plastic pumpkin hanging from the porch is her most cherished decoration because her son chose it. "My son was non-verbal until he was 7 and we were in the store and he got so excited when he saw it... just the smile and delight over this big pumpkin and how excited he was to get this big pumpkin from Walgreen's, that's probably why it's my most cherished."
    - mannynyc, CNN iReport producer

Growing up in the Ohio - we made fun of people with plastic pumpkins.  Now, I am proud to say, I am one of them!

It’s a big change.  I had celebrated Halloween in the Mid-west almost my entire life.  When my husband and I moved to Vero Beach, Florida in 1995 I wondered how I would ever capture that same spirit among the beach and palm trees.

I think because we don’t have falling leaves or apple cider mills near-by, we work harder to bring the crazy spirit of Halloween alive!

Anything creepy, tacky or just plain zany is OK if it brings a smile to my retired neighbors or our eight year old son (who prefers to be referred to as, “Darth Vader”).

So check out our decorations!  We will not appear on the cover of a Pottery Barn catalog, but we have a great time, haunting the neighborhood with our tacky decorations!
