CNN PRODUCER NOTE     wolt says she did a project with her class about large numbers, and used 7 billion as the focus. Her husband saw the iReport link and sent it to her asking if she'd done something similar, and she sent along three of her favorites. She's also made another video explaining the project.

I am a 7th grade math teacher at Francis W. Parker School in Chicago.  Last week I assigned the kids a LARGE numbers project to help them conceptualize and visualize what BIG numbers like millions and billions are.  The students researched things that were worth various amounts of money then thought about how they would put those amounts on a number line.  Their scale was 1 millimeter equaled $1.  They placed everything that they found less than $1000 on 1000 millimeters (or 1 meter).  Then they figured out how long their number line would need to be to place the things they found that were bigger than $1000.  One student group, found a site that listed Steve Jobs' net worth at 7 billion dollars.  They figured out in order to place that on their number line given their scale, their number line would have to stretch 7000 kliometers.  This means it would stretch from my classroom in Chicago, Illinois to the middle of the south pacific ocean off the coast of Chile. I gave the kids a challenge to create a video that explained their project and how they conceptualize 7 billion.  I uploaded a couple of the videos they made.  If you are interested in seeing all the videos my kids created, please feel free to contact me.  Their number line assignment was very engaging for them and really demonstrated a hands-on lesson on how they could conceptualize a number as large as 7 billion.
