Bear Traps Are All Over in Taiwan – have caused more than thousands of healthy dogs and cats lose their legs and live with restricted freedom for the rest of their lives! Most of the dogs in advanced countries paralyzed or have their legs amputated because of birth effects, age or disease. However, this is not the case in Taiwan. Most of the Taiwanese stray dogs were born healthy. But at their one or two years of age (sometimes less), they would step on the most inhumane and cruel weapon—bear traps and start their journey in suffering for the rest of their lives. While it is against the law to place bear traps in Taiwan, bear traps are still very easily to be purchased. It can be purchase at any hardware store on every street corner in Taiwan at a very cheap price. One bear trap usually cause only USD$1.50. Sometimes the hardware store would even do promotions, such as buy one large bear trap and get one small free. Please review the pictures and imagine how painful it is to be trapped by very tight bear trap. Unable to open the trap by themselves, with out human’s help, the dogs will carry and travel with the trap around until they lost their foot. The blood lost and the pain suffered shaken me every time I look at the pictures. Few wounded dogs are “lucky” to have rescue team got involved and help them remove the bear traps on time and get to keep their legs after a long recovery. Most of the dog’s legs got amputated to avoid infections spread. They would lose one leg and start living in the dog sanctuaries for the rest of their lives because hardly anyone would adopt handicap dogs. The dog sanctuaries are operated by private organization or families that have very little donations and very limited manpower. These dogs have to share loves with hundreds or thousands of other dogs while they are the ones needs a lot of loves the most to recover from their painful experience… The dogs got to the sanctuaries are also considered “lucky” because many others would still be in the wild and step on another bear trap after one leg is already lost. Some dogs showed up with 2 legs hurt. Lost 2 back legs aren’t bad enough because most of them can still move with 2 front legs (dogs mainly put their weight on the 2 front legs). The worst case is for dogs losing both front legs… They won’t be able to move around… There are also tragedy cases which dogs were caught on the wired bear traps that are pined to the ground. People found dogs’ dead bodies and realize they have died alone, painfully suffered, thirst for water, hunger for food and desperation for help… Please refer to the following link for some more pictures that shows many dogs have lost their legs because Taiwanese government still allows bear traps on the market! http://www.pbase.com/boogier/sufferers_of_gin_trap This is only a very small portion. The photographer is also an animal rescuer in Taiwan. The pictures taken are the dogs met by him and only him. If one person can meet so many trapped dogs, can you imagine how many others exists? Taiwanese strays are in desperate help from experience and knowledgeable animal protection specialists or groups to teach Taiwanese government to establish the system correctly and humanely. If everything were reported to the Taiwanese government without national support and supervise, the government would just take all the dogs in and kill them all in also inhumane ways. Please refer to this link for how the Taiwanese government put down the shelter dogs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQLnJawo6k0&eurl= (All dogs died in fear and desperation…we don’t want to see that happens...) We sincerely hope experience and knowledgeable animal protection specialists or groups can help to provide Taiwanese government ideas to solve the stray dog problem in more HUMANE ways, such was neuter and spay. Thank you very much for your attention. More Brutal Animal Torture by some Taiwanese civilians to come (in translating process): 4. Robber bands rapped on dog’s mouths and necks caused dogs’ heads swelled can easily found everywhere in Taiwan 5. A daschund mix found skinned alive and abandoned on the street 6. Disgusting animal tortures done by Taiwanese soldiers. 6. Dogs eating dogs at government owned shelter and back yard or professional breeding farm 7. Dog tortures done by Taiwanese elementary students and college students – what’s wrong with the education? 8. Other unthinkable wicked ways done by Taiwanese civilians to make strays suffer and sometimes cause their lives. 9. What Taiwanese animal rights advocators hope the government to do to help in the stray dog problem?
