SEMA 2011: Small Cars Are Cool (and sometimes very loud)

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     mpgomatic says he's been working on a documentary on the sport of rallycross racing and has gotten to know the drivers over the past 15 months. He says "Top Gear" host Tanner Foust is a great guy and that the drivers have always found time for shoots.
    - davidw, CNN iReport producer

It's been said that Americans do not like small cars, unlike the Europeans who love them. But that's largely due to the fact that we've been denied the coolest small cars.

    Until now.

I've been chasing the launch of Rallycross here in the United States since the summer of 2010 for an independent documentary. US Rallycross is nothing less than a means to convince US that small cars can be cool.

    Very cool.

So what's it like to ride in Tanner Foust's tire-smoking 650 HP AWD Ford Fiesta Rockstar Rallycross car?

How about 0-60 in under two seconds! http://MPGomatic.com puts you in the passenger seat with Tanner at SEMA 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The crowd out front of the Las Vegas Convention Center was entertained by  the drifting / gymkhana skills of fellow Octane Academy members Ken Block, Brian Deegan, and 2010 Formula Drift Champ Vaughn Gitten Jr, as well as 2011 Formula Drift runner-up, Justin Pawlak.

Tanner co-host's Top Gear USA and has worked as a stunt driver in many films, including "The Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift," "Iron Man 2," and "The Dukes of Hazzard." He took the crown in the inaugural 2011 Global Rallycross Championship and is a two-time Formula Drift champion, as well as an X-Games gold medalist.

In order of appearance: Ken Block (Gymkhana 3 Ford Fiesta), Brian Deegan (GRC Metal Mullisha Ford Fiesta), Vaughn Gitten Jr. (Monster Energy Formula Drift Ford Mustang), Tanner Foust (GRC Rockstar Ford Fiesta).

    I shot. The kid rode.

Cameras: two Contour HD1080s (fore and aft), an iPhone 4 (in car), and a Canon XH A1s.
