This iReport is part of an assignment:
Sarah Palin's political future |
McCain's VP pick
Like everyone else, I am shocked that Senator McCain bypassed all the front runners in the VP race notably Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty, Charlie Crist, and carlie Fiorina to select a rather unkown quantity, Sarah Palin who according to reports he has only met twice as his running mate. Though the choice of Mrs. Palin may have a dual motive; to appease the conservatives especially the evangelicals some of whom think Senator McCain is not conservative enough, because of her pro-gun, anti abortion and skepticism about global warming, and also aybe in a bid to appeal to some disaffected "Hillary girls", I believe the choice is misguided for a number of reasons.First, the choice of Mrs. Palin diminishes McCain's criticism of Senator Obama's lack of experience to be commander in chief since she only has 2 years experience as governor of Alaska. Second, Senator Mccain's weakest suit is the economy and at a time the number one issue in the upcoming elections is the economy, one would have thought Senator McCain would have considered selecting a VP candidate who has impeccable economic credentials like Carlie Fiorina or Mitt Romney to complement Senator McCain's strong foreign policy and national security credentials. Third, the choice of Mrs. Palin will not help Senator McCain in battle ground states like Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania. In my view, the choice of Mitt Romney whose father was governor of Michigan or Charlie Crist who is currently governor of Florida could have put either Michican or Florida in play for the Republicans just like Obama's choice of Joe Biden has put PA in play for the Democrats. To conclude, while the choice of Mrs. palin may rekindle and energize the conservative base, not much political fortune can be drived from it and in a close election like this, the democrats must be really excited that once again, Senator McCain's judgment has let him down.
