Occupy Wall Street |
FREE FLU SHOTS FOR THE 99% AT ZUCCOTTI PARK
- Echerneff, CNN iReport producer
Free flu shots were offered to protesters at Zuccotti Park Sunday afternoon for Occupy Wall Street protesters.
The services were being provided by Physicians For A National Health Program (PNHP) New York Metro Chapter. Dr. Mary O’Brien with Columbia Health Service department and a member of PNHP said the group decided to come out and offer the flu shots as a way to support good health care.
She said every year dozens of Americans go without flu shots and become ill. Because the protesters are in such close quarters (sharing tents), she said they are at a high risk to getting colds and other seasonal infections.
The shots were being given from 2 pm until 4 pm. Anyone visiting the park were allowed to take advantage of the free shots. PNHP are also at the Park Wednesdays and Thursdays providing shots. There is a make shaft first aid tent setup to assist with minor emergencies of the protesters.
While the Occupy Wall Street Protest is entering into it’s fourth week, with no end in site, many local businesses have started complaining. Business owners say police barricades and some unruly protesters have kept frequent customers and tourist from entering their establishments.
In recent weeks, Mayor Bloomberg has been quiet on asking the protesters to leave the park. In other large cities, however, like Oakland, California and San Francisco police have had clashes trying to evict protesters from public parks.
