Church Bans Interracial Marriage
(Gulnare, Kentucky) - One eastern Kentucky community is divided after a Pike County church voted Sunday not to allow interracial couples to be members or participate in church services. According to members of the Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church, not everyone is in agreement with yesterday's vote. Melvin Thompson, who actually submitted the proposal to the church, defended his position, and says he doesn't feel this will affect the Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church at all. "I do not believe in interracial marraiges, and I do not believe this will give our church a black eye at all. It came before the church on Sunday and the vote was 9 in favor and 6 against," said Thompson. One member of the community whose family attends Gulnare Freewill Baptist, L.J. Harville, says she finds Sunday's vote hard to believe. "I just can't believe that a church, where people go for solace in times of need, can show such a display of racism," explained Harville. East Kentucky Broadcasting obtained a copy of Mr. Thompson's proposal which passed on Sunday.
The following is that proposal : "That the Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church does not condone interracial marriage. Parties of such marriages will not be received as members, nor will they they be used in worship services and other church functions, with the exception being funerals. All are welcome to our public worship services. This recommendation is not intended to judge the salvation of anyone, but is intended to promote greater unity among the church body and the community we serve." Submitted to the church business committee November 9, 2011 for their consideration by Melvin Thompson, member, Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church.
I would also like to mention that the original article does not belong to me, below you will find the link to the original article. I decided to post the article here to gain national attention on this subject because the entire community is angry that such blatant acts of racism still exist in our home town. Several people have already began posting on Facebook, Topix and multiple other popular websites calling for a boycott of this church as well as Melvin Thompson's local hardware store!
