iPhone 4S No Audio on Outgoing Calls
Can you hear me now?
A huge discussion thread (https://discussions.apple.com/message/16424561#16424561) is brewing on the official Apple Support Community teaming with frustrated users who can't be heard on calls made from their brand new iPhone 4S. The discussion, started just days after the 4S release has swelled up to 1136 posts (nearly half the posts on the entire iPhone 4S forum) and received over 90,000 views.
Users are reporting muted audio on 20% of calls where either they or the other party can't be heard during the call. A workaround that seems to work for most users is to toggle the speaker button, getting the iPhone out of the muted state.
The consensus so far is that only a phone replacement from Apple fixes the problem, even though many users have had to go through several replacements to get a working phone, indicating this is a hardware fault in the device. Apple's iOS 5.0.1 update has failed to produce a fix and it is yet not clear whether the upcoming iOS 5.1 contains a fix.
Nearly two months since it's October 14th release, Apple has chosen to remain "mute" (pun intended) on the issue, inconveniencing many users who have had to either repeatedly travel long distances to their closest Apple Store or ship their devices (at a $30 cost) and remain without a handset.
Several major tech blogs have covered the problem including Mashable(http://mashable.com/2011/11/07/iphone-4s-audio-bug/), Gizmodo (http://gizmodo.com/5856807/the-iphone-4s-doesnt-care-about-your-outbound-calls) and Macrumors (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/11/03/iphone-4s-users-complaining-of-audio-issues-no-audio-on-outgoing-calls-echoes-static/) and the problem has it's own Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/iPhone4SOutgoingCallNoAudio with over 300 Likes from affected users.
