Kim Jong Il dead at 69

    Rolling the Dice

After hearing the news of Kim Jong Il’s death, it felt like time stopped for a couple seconds. I recalled my old blog post about North Korea and remembered how I hoped he would die soon so that change will be brought onto the country faster. And it has happened. I told my parents about his death and they were shocked as well. So the question now is, what happens next?

    Reunification?

    Who’s the new leader?

    Will the country change?

    Will it get better?

    or worse..

It is completely up in the air.
We can not predict much from this. The government is rolling the dice by pushing Kim Jong Un as the successor but honestly, Kim Jong Un is not ready. There are many disadvantages of him being the new leader.1. He is not the oldest, he is the youngest (which goes against Korean traditions and further hurts his cult of personality) 2. He is in his late twenties which means he is very young 3. He does not have much military training, which means he will not have a lot respect from the military as much as the military had for Kim Il Sung (this was a problem that Kim Jong Il faced as well but of course the military did not speak up about this issue) 4. He does not appear like a strong leader, which is a poor start for his cult of personality. People often see images of him with a blank stare. I doubt the people of NK see him as a stable, strong leader. 5. His future decisions are also going to be like rolling dice. He could make rash decisions that will make conditions in North Korea better or a lot worse...

But what the future holds is really unpredictable. He could just follow his fathers footsteps, make really STUPID decisions and make matters worse, or bring positive change by opening up the country. North Korea really can not stay closed up forever.

Economically they're doing terrible so they HAVE to open their doors if they want to survive any longer. Their people are terribly malnourished and their education system, which has always been poor due to it being heavily focused on the history of North Korea and the leader's cult of personality as opposed to other essential topics such as math and the sciences, is deteriorating and rising up a generation that will have stunted growth and very limited education.

The older government advisors are probably using him like a puppet but since he is young, he could easily rebel since he is technically the new leader. But who really knows. That country is so secretive, no one's predictions ever came right. all I can do is pray my hardest for positive change b/c seriously, my heart aches for those people suffering. It has been almost 60 years of separation from not only South Korea but also separation from the entire WORLD and FREEDOM, these people need to be freed.

    Please pray for North Korea.
