    Waiting and Reflecting

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     'Film is my first love. I cherish the process and still only shoot film,' says U.S. Army officer and photographer finneykimsey. He shares with us these photos taken during his departure from Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in 2003. He says: 'At the age of 16 I discovered photography. I found it useful when trying to negotiate the ups and downs of adolescence. I always had a camera with me. It was great to hide behind in social settings. My high school offered film courses and I took every one I could to include an independent study my senior year.'

He enlisted in the Army National Guard in 2000, at the age of 17, in order to finance his education. He explains: 'My military experiences and my photos/film work have been very interdependent. In fact, the student film that got me accepted to [film school] was written during basic training. [...] As an artist I wanted to have credibility. Why would anyone care about what I have to say? So I took on my first deployment as an adventure. It evolved into something more complex, which as with any life experience, takes time to digest.'

'I won't be in the Army forever but I will always have these photos and everything attached to them.'

As a 19 year old kid I was deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for 11 months in 2002. As an aspiring film maker I took along an old Nikon FG to try and document my first taste of the real world out of high school. These photo depicts our final moments in Guantanamo. We are all packed into a cold war hanger waiting to board our flight home. The looks of anticipation and quiet reflection are priceless. Everyone waiting for relief and contemplating the meaning of what we just went through. The plane our light at the end of the tunnel.
