Degrading of Enemy Photos and Videos Is Nothing New

The recent video that arose of Marines in Afghanistan urinating on dead Taliban, is nothing new. Killing is such a taboo in a culture, but in wartime soldiers are told it is excepted to kill. This takes a huge psychological toll on individuals. Sometimes the only way to deal with the thought of killing a human is to completely dehumanize your enemy and kill without regret. Soldiers in war zones, become so disconnected from civilian culture that urinating on dead or degrading the enemy, seems normal and an expected thing to do to those who were just trying to kill you and your comrades. Still, this should of not have happened. The military has a system of ranks exactly so this doesn't happen. Lower ranking soldiers are taught to kill without restraint or regret. Officers are put in place to keep in order those below them. Those that should be charged with crimes, in the urinating incident, should be the commanding officers of the soldiers in the video. It is an obvious example of lack of leadership. It is nothing new to degrade your enemy and it has always occurred. But, it is the leaderships job to maintain a level of control, so lower ranking soldiers do not run wild.
