Worldwide Candlelight Vigil for Unity|New York City
Commemorative Candlelight March for Dr Martin Luther King Jr dedicated to Unity
"An edifice that produces beggars must be reconstructed" (MLK)
Candlelight carrying marchers departed the steps of the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine at 7PM (in 11 degree temperatures!) and up Broadway, past Columbia University, Barnard College and Seminary Row (Union & Hebrew Theological Seminaries), toward The Riverside Church for a celebration of the work and words of Dr Martin Luther King Jr which pre-saged the Occupied Wall Street philosophy and actions.
Occupyers packed the nave to capacity and were greeted by the Reverend Stephen H Phelps.
Speakers included Estella Vazquez, Executive Vice President of 1199/SEIU (Dr King's favorite union) who offered an emotionally charged message unifying her union to Occupy Wall Street.
Among other speakers and performers were Civil Rights Activist Norman Siegel who offered Remarks on Dr King; & Patti Smith, who recited an evocative poem to Martin.
