Married at a young age? |
My teenage pregnancy
I was a senior in HS when I got pregnant with my oldest daughter (who is the graduate in the photo). It was only 3 months before my 18th birthday and HS graduation.
Her father and I were married on September 2, 1989 and she was born in January 1990. I had my oldest son almost 3 years later.
No one in my family was surprised or upset by my pregnancy-I have 6 sisters, 5 of whom were pregnant in their teens, too. (My oldest sister gave birth at age 14)
It was difficult rearing children as a teenager. I was not able to have fun and go to college like the other kids in my graduation class. I had to grow up very quickly. The only thing I would change is the age at which I had the kids. If I could have the SAME children, but in my mid 20's, I would do it over.
We are a midwestern family. We live comfortably, but earn less than the poverty level. I have 5 children, total. Three boys sandwiched between two girls. We are a farm family, now.
I made a point to instill abstinance in my oldest daughter's mind from a very young age. I wanted to make sure that she WAS NOT going to get pregnant in HS or before she graduates from college! It worked. She is in her first year of college with no children. I am confidant that she will graduate before beginning a family.
We don't worry too much about the boys-we'll let the girls' families do that worrying! Now, I just have to get the youngest girl through HS . . . .
