Romanian protests. Day 12
Yesterday, January 24th, Romanians celebrated 153 years since the Little Union (please check wikipedia for more info). Considering the protests, the biggest in 20 years since communism disappeared, only officially, from Romania, I was hoping for a positive message that would gather all of us around a figure we can trust. Even the president Basescu, who did us so much wrong, even him had the chance of straitening some of the things he can control. I was hoping for a speech where he’ll support an independent government with proven professionals in their respective fields, would dismiss the law that consolidates the 2 elections next year and so on, the decent solutions to get us out of the ditch they drove us to.
But this was not the case. He had his first speech since the protests started and he only spread hate and mud towards everybody. He finds everybody guilty, except him and his party, even though they are ruling the country for 7 years now. He was asking for respect (!!!) and union between the people in a speech filled with elements aimed at dividing the society.
On the other hand, the opposition leaders did the exact same thing. Their speeches were not even close to any good words that would come from a good willing politician. Only hate and calls to unite against Basescu, forgetting that that was the day we celebrated one of the most important moments in our history, one of the few when we worked together and achieved our goals.
My only hope remains in the crowds I’ve found in the streets while protesting. For the first time I was proud of the union made with a positive and clear goal, to show that we are here and that we want our country back. The “Down with Basescu” solution is just one of the many formed there and it came natural considering the way he ran the country these past years. I even have a good feeling about what can be achieved if dialog is started and solutions are found, but solutions that coincide with the interest of the people, not their political vendettas.
