    Chocolate- Flavored Polvoron

Polvoron (pronounced as pul-vu-roon in Filipino) is a kind of ‘soft candy’ made of flour, sugar, butter and powdered milk. The flour is toasted and all the ingredients are mixed together and shaped into round or oval-shaped molds. Polvoron over the years has become one of the most loved sweet delicacies by Filipinos.

There are now some home-based business enterprises that are making polvoron and selling such delicacy in marketplaces. Sometimes you will even find it in some small retail stores. The traditional version has come a long way because you will now find polvoron with various flavors like chocolate-flavored polvoron, “cookies and cream polvoron”, and ‘pinipig polovorn”. Some versions have nuts and fruits stuffed inside the said sweet delicacy.

The chocolate-flavored polvorons that have been featured in the photos were cooked by my female cousin- Riza Carlitos. All the ingredients for the chocolate sauce that my female cousin used in making the chocolate-flavored polvoron were bought from my yoga instructor- Garuda Das. Mr. Das is a vegetarian cook who makes sure that the foods and food-ingredients that he sell to his neighbors are slave-free items. Such yoga teacher of mine is an active campaigner against child labor and human trafficking.

To make chocolate covered polvoron, please follow the recipe below:

    Polvoron mixture:

2 cups of all purpose flour

    2 cups powdered milk

    1 cup refined sugar

    1 cup butter

    Chocolate sauce:

    1 cup dark Chocolate

    1/2 cup Fresh Milk

    1/4 cup Granulated sugar

Toast the flour in a small sauce pan until it turns light brown. You have to toast the flour over medium-low heat. Stir continuously to avoid burning. Cool the flour for 10 minutes then sift it, with the pinch of salt, into a large mixing bowl. Combine all the sifted ingredients and stir well. Or, you can sift them all together. Pour in the melted butter and add sugar. Mix well.

Pack the mixture in polvoron pressers using a spoon and place the polvoron pieces in a plate and store in the freezer for an hour.

Melt the chocolate in a bowl using a double boiler or a steamer. Mix in the fresh milk and granulated sugar. Mix well until it is smooth. Stick in a plastic toothpick inside a polvoron piece gently and dip it in the chocolate sauce to coat. Insert in something sturdy like a styro block. My cousin used the ‘’partial-dipping to the chocolate-sauce method’ because she wants to see he polvoron with 2 colors. Such method of partially-dipping the polvoron to the chocolate-sauce is widespread here in the Philippines when people make chocolate-flavored polvoron. Wrap or store as you like. Wrap in pieces of cellophane paper. That’s how we make chocolate-flavored polvoron here in the Philippines.
