    - ALSphotogirl, CNN iReport producer

Afternoon clouds move above Water Management District 3A as seen from a tree island being monitored by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD). Tree islands, which provide important habitat for wildlife and bird species, have been dissapearing drastically since the 1940s due to water levels in the central Everglades being maintained too high and prevented from naturally sheet flowing into the Shark River Slough to the south.

The Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition explorers paddle by kayak across the heart of the everglades. The Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition is a 100-day, 1,000 mile trek from the Everglades to South Georgia to raise awareness of a functional ecological corridor that spans the entire state of Florida.
