    African Trade Routes

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     'What is interesting about Mali is it was a powerful country thousands of years ago. Many of the ancient trade routes went through Mali. The old manuscripts in Timbuktu are breathtaking. To be able to imagine what it was like thousands of year ago and stand where people have stood for thousands of years is inspiring,' says konacraig, who took these photos during a trip to Western Africa in 2011.

The country is Mali. Situated in West Africa, the country served as a crossroads to ancient trading routes thousands of years ago. The salt trade started in the north and ended in Timbuktu. The Niger River which crisscrosses the country is a source of food and vitality for its people. The Dogun Country can be explored where villages which are several thousand years old can still be seen as if they have not changed. Mali is one of the countries which tourism has bypassed but has an interesting history and worth a visit.
