Trauma, starvation hit quake victims in Phl
Reporter Diego Adeva of Radyo Bombo Philippines on Tuesday said the towns of Jimalalud, La Libertad and Guihulngan extremely damaged.
Adeva said people slept just outside of their houses, along the roads, under the trees and others climbed the mountains for fear of their lives.
Most of the houses destroyed by the earthquake had cracks and some of the villages were turned into ghost towns.
Some of the residents were forced to climb the mountains for fear of tsunami, especially those living near the sea or along the coastline, due to continued tremor.
Drinking water flowing from the faucets also turned black or gray after the earthquake destroyed the waterway because of tremor.
Assistance like bottles of mineral water and food could not be brought to the town of La Libertad due to the destruction of the bridge in Marcelo Village.
Vice Mayor Christopher Ampong said they hope to reach the affected areas with relief goods today because many of his constituents have nothing to eat.
Ampong’s group also attempted to climb the mountains to ask the residents who spent the night to come down so they could extend help and accurate information.
Earlier, Guihulngan Mayor Ernesto Reyes reported that 10 students were killed after their school collapsed.
Another report said 29 people were killed in a landslide in Planas Village.
Reyes also said over 100 people were wounded and others taken to hospital.
Most of those buried by landslides and debris are presumed dead because there was no immediate rescue since yesterday.
Aside from destroyed water system and 11 bridges, no electricity supply in the affected areas.
In an interview, Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo said more than 40 are still missing.
