    Remembering Whitney Houston

Whitney was an icon and hero for Gen X black girls

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     NOLADarling told me that when she turned on MTV and saw Whitney Houston playing as a teenager, "I understood how my parents felt when Diana Ross performed on the Ed Sullivan Show or how my grandparents felt listening to a baseball game on the radio when Jackie Robinson was up at bat for the Dodgers."
    - lila, CNN iReport producer

As a black teenager going to a predominantly white high school in California, Whitney was my style icon and hero--the first black female pop star who was as beautiful as she was talented. I remember when her video for "You Give Good Love" first aired on MTV, I sat mesmerized in front of the TV watching her.She made me and other girls like me feel like we didn't have to be blond and blue-eyed to be beautiful and admired. I wish she knew how much she did for my and my friends self-esteem, and I wish the joy she gave people and the love those closest to her had been enough to sustain and uplift her like she uplifted so many of us.
