    Amsterdam canal skating race

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Frandalf joined around 10,000 other Amsterdam residents to watch the canal ice skating races Saturday night. The much-anticipated event, which was last held in 1997, only occurs when the canals freeze over. 'It's a pity it's over now,' he said. 'We may get some more snow this season, but no ice.'
    - katie, CNN iReport producer

AMSTERDAM - Saturday night, February 11, 2012, a rare skating race was held on the Imperial Canal (Keizersgracht) in Amsterdam, located between the Leidsestraat and the New Spiegelstraat. Divided into several age categories, the participants skated over a distance of 150 meters against each other. More than ten thousand people gathered along the canal to see them skate, while dancing, singing and stomping their feet to keep themselves warm.
But there was also Koek & Zopie (cake & a glass of mulled wine or a cup of hot chocolate with whipped cream). The skate competition was last held in 1997.
Ronald Mulder may call himself 'Emperor of Amsterdam' and Annette Gerritsen, the audience favorite, may call herself 'Empress of Amsterdam' till the next skate competition.
