The Big Dig Out...Cleanup in Urbino, Italy

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     dixiecatt shot these photos yesterday of the town of Urbino, Italy, beginning to extricate itself from the heavy snowfalls that have blanketed the area recently. 'The town engineers are checking roofs since some have caved in and some are in danger of caving in,' she said. 'Supermarkets are still struggling since the trucks are only now being let into the city. Life will not return to normal for some time. Hopefully within a week or two with the good weather we should see the results!'

Finally the sun is out and having temperatures reaching 2°C is like being in the tropics for us. The big dig out began right after the snows subsided. I was finally able to get to town (since the towns outside the city are still in need of cleaning) to see the "Big Dig". As you can see the soldiers from Civil Protection have made great strides in the piazza which is nearly clean. They are working day and night removing now out of the city center. The main streets are passable; but, it's the small side streets that are still first-floor high in snow, making them virtually impassable. But, life moves on and people are out and about trying to get back to normal.
