Aurora and barrack
occupying Iceland built extensive barrack quarters in
Reykjavik and elsewhere. There were hundreds of
these barracks sheltering thousands of soldiers
which also worked and exercised in these buildings.
In some places army hospitals were erected with
checkpoints. The British army left and the Americans
replaced them in the summer of 1941. When the
soldiers moved out of the barracks Icelandic families
started moving in using the barracks both as housing
facilities and as warehouses until well into the sixties
