    Fair Trade Birthday Cake

'I thought about little changes I could make each day to improve conditions...starting with chocolate. I loved putting effort into this project. Even though I had to walk to a farther store to get the Fair Trade chocolate and sugar, I knew it was worth it because it wouldn't cause pain/tragedy to someone else while I was enjoying my dessert ... To me, I have the freedom of choice, and I can help improve someone's life with a simple decision.'

    Today is my roommate's birthday, she's pretty amazing... and we both love Chocolate. Not only did I want to bake her a cake for her birthday, but it was an excellent opportunity for my first challenge, finding fair-trade flour, sugar, and cocoa. All of these items are notoriously associated with child/slave labor, unfathomable working conditions, and farmers not receiving a fair wage for their goods.

    Fortunately, I live in San Francisco, a very 'global' city, and there are some stores around that I had seen carry Fair trade items. I was at the grocery store by my house, and almost reached for some sugar without this label (because I was in a hurry), but I thought about this challenge and I decided to walk to the other grocery store so I could buy sugar with the Fair Trade Certified label on it. Yes, it was 7 blocks away and I was tired and in a hurry, but I was glad I had this blog to hold me accountable.

    And it made me smile a little, because now that I have been exposed to what simple product decisions can have a big impact, I decided to go the extra distance for the product...and I sure hope you will too.

    The birthday girl made me laugh because she said, "This cake is guilt-free!" It was absolutely delicious and I enjoyed every single bite!
