Remembering Davy Jones |
They Made a Monkee Fan out of Me
I was pregnant with my daughter in 1989 and had made a shirt to wear to a concert that read "Future Monkees Fan" with an arrow pointing down. Little did I know then how true that would be. Kristin was born with Cystic Fibrosis and when she was about 5 years old she came and got me and took me to her room. She pointed to her tv and ask Mama who are they? I looked and told her it was The Monkees. She replied I like them, they're funny. Kristin voiced her desire to meet The Monkees. Soon after I contacted the Make a Wish Foundation and they sent Kristin and myself to Richmond, VA so she could meet David, Peter and Micky. David was so wonderful with Kristin and placed her on his lap as he sat on the table in the hall where the meeting took place. The meeting wasn't rushed and David made sure that I was even able to get into the video that I was making of the meeting. David gave Kristin some flowers that I still have to this day.
The Monkees have been apart of my life and the lives of my children and the music has brought comfort at times of crisis. Since David's passing, which happened on my birthday it has been all Monkees music. Last year this time it was because I found out they were going to tour and Kristin and I were making plans to see them in Denver. Kristin came to where I work on Wednesday after I told her the news and tried to comfort me. We sat in my office remembering her special meeting with David in Richmond and also in Houston at the hockey game. What I will always have are my memories of David and in time I know that I will again be comforted by the music of The Monkees. I have other stories of this wonderful man and the group he was proud to be associated with. However, since Wednesday this is what my thoughts have gone to and wanted to share them with you.
Just like there will never be another group like The Monkees. There will never be another David Thomas Jones. What a treasure he was and will always be for the thousands of fanatics like myself. You see, they made a Monkee out of David. But they made a Monkees fan out of me! I love you David. Thank you for the memories!!!
