A Slice Of Polynesia In California Tiki Palms
- Jareen, CNN iReport producer
I discovered these cool custom carved live palm trees here in Moreno Valley CA a few days ago. They were at the corner of Graham St and Alessandro Blvd, behind the US post office.
Carvings on live palm trees are best made on robust Mexican Fan palms. They are commonly called "Tiki" trees.
"Tiki" refers to large wood carvings of humanoid forms in Central Eastern Polynesian cultures of the Pacific Ocean.
The word 'Tiki' was the name given to large wooden carvings in roughly human shape. The carvings often serve to mark the boundaries of sacred or significant sites.
This was a cool surprise to see in our neighborhood. Enjoy your Tiki experience!
