Severe floods and mudslides in Hawaii March 6, 2012

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     PuakeaJutka lives in Honolulu and says waterfalls are 'cascading and flooding the streets below. We are waiting for more mudslides and more severe flooding.'
    - dsashin, CNN iReport producer

The heavy rain during the night and today caused lots of damages on the Islands of Kauai and Oahu. We have, severe floods, mudslides, hail, waterspouts (water tornadoes) rock slides, street closures, power outages, just name a few. I will update later but I try to upload this report until we have power again. I thank you so very much for the interviews of Chris Herndon, General Manager of Discovery Bay in Honolulu, Hawaii and one of my neighbors also in 35th floor in my high rise Sue Young. Mahalo Nui Loa!

    Thank You: PuakeaJutka

Sorry for the smudges in the video but I did part of the video in heavy rain and high winds and it seems that my camera electronic has some problems. Also the video and photos are not edited, because I had to hurry to upload before the power goes again. At the moment I hear all over sirens. We are still in the storm situation.

    Addendum

I would like to thank everybody for taking time out of their busy lives to visit or comment on this report, either negatively or positively. First, I would like to answer some questions about our wonderful building. Discovery Bay was built in 1977 as a landmark pair of twin towers of 42 floors, so it is not a new building but one of the best-maintained and best-loved ones in Hawaii. Our outstanding and knowledgeable management cares a great deal about these twin towers that carry the names of the ships of Captain Cook, who discovered Hawaii in 1778. Yes, the windows are not perfect and we have flooding in very heavy storms, but the windows withstood the might of Hurricane Iniki in 1992 and the huge earthquakes that hit Hawaii in 2006 (6.8), so it is possible that the windows were damaged slightly in those events.

What I love about our beautiful Islands of Hawaii, my treasured home, is that even though we have people from almost every nation of the globe, we manage to live peacefully together. English is actually my fourth language, and I came to Hawaii as an adult. I am still writing books in Hungarian, my mother tongue, or in German, the language I had to learn as a refugee in Switzerland, where I began my studies at the University of Zurich, my alma mater. Nevertheless, I was under a tremendously stressful situation because of the flooding and the storm, and I had to hurry to upload the report between power outages, so I did not pay much attention to the grammar. This report was about a disaster; I wrote it during the floods and uploaded it while the floods were still in full swing. I know I should go back and edit it, but I had not slept the night before as so many in Kauai and Oahu during the storm and I was exhausted. Thank you PuakeaJutka
