BUStling: Startups Hustle to Build New Products on Bus Ride to SXSW

StartupBus (www.startupbus.com) began in 2010 as a team built a website and brand en route to SXSW Interactive in Austin, Texas from San Francisco. The idea expanded and now there are ten buspreneur teams from places like Louisiana, Cincinnati, and even Mexico! There are guidelines and rules like only alumni can be bus 'conductors'.

As I type this, the finale pitch is taking place. The ideas, products, apps that were born on a bus are starting here at SXSW. Here's a review of the ideas pitched (I only saw some of them) and the announcement of winners:

Mexico - Spott (bit.ly/spott) - a geolocation-based document sharing mobile application. You pick your location, upload files (photos, documents, guides, articles), share with those in that location. Future versions include Spott for businesses.

Florida - BumperCrop (www.bumpercrop.co/) - an online marketplace for locally-grown crops for neighborhoods.

New York - Adventeur (adventeur.co/) - A mobile app that helps you choose your own adventure to explore your city. New events and ideas nearby will be presented to you. Premium offering. Partner with local businesses for exclusive events.

Silicon Valley - Cerealize (Cerealize.com) - Custom breakfast cereal, delivered to your door. Mix and match your favorite cereals and mix-ins.

Washington, D.C. - Curios City (getcuriouscity.com) - A mobile guide curated by city adult nightlife experts to help users discover scenes and entertainment options. Uses an invitation-only niche community.

New York - Happstr (happstr.com) - Mobile app to check-in when you're happy and share it with your friends/network. It uses a global index heat map to drive you to happy places, businesses, cities, etc.

    JUDGE-SELECTED WINNERs:

**Winning products is typically chosen based on
    product-market fit.

    Official Winner - Cerealize!
Runner Up - Florida - BumperCrop!

What to Watch: Startup House (startuphouse.co) will be opening in San Francisco for StartupBus alumni/participants to help them foster their projects that began on the bus even after their SXSW pitch.
