    More from Weribe

McCain, Hanoi Hilton, Guantanamo and the Geneva Conventions

Does it not seem ironic to anyone else that John McCain (who never forgets to remind us that he was a POW at the Hanoi Hilton) supports treating the prisoners at Guantanamo with the same disregard for human rights that he experienced himself? It was a problem when he was held as a POW; apparently it is not a problem when it is someone else being denied their basic rights as described in the Geneva Conventions. McCain called the recent Supreme Court ruling that "established that foreign terrorism suspects held in detention at the US military base at Guantanamo Bay have the constitutional right to challenge their detention in civilian courts.....one of the worst decisions in the history of this country". (www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2008/06/14/mccain_blasts_ruling_on_guantanamo/) While McCain has supported closing Guantanamo, he also supports denying inmates any access to civilian courts, regardless of their location. As Lt. General Robert G. Gard Jr. (USA, Ret.) stated: "It's time for the Senator to stop cheapening the war experiences of thousands of vets and his fellow POWs, and his own as well, by stretching the boundaries of logic to make his POW status a wild-card rebuttal to all accusations or an answer to all difficult questions." (http://vetsforobama.org/2008/08/22/obama-pounces-on-mccains-having-too-many-homes-to-count-mccain-responds-with-the-pow-card/) Take the time to read more about McCain, especially those who studied, worked and were POWs with him. One example is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLWEDMLmjKk. One thing is certain...Our treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo is going to backfire. When our men and women are being treated with the same disregard for the Geneva Conventions that we are guilty of - and we protest that treatment - we will have no moral authority on which to stand. If you vote for McCain/Palin (and have supported Bush/Cheney) then you are complicit in allowing that to happen. If you are willing to have that on your conscience, then go ahead and vote Republican. If, however, you are squeamish about having your son/daughter or other Americans tortured, abused, sexually abused or murdered, then you need to vote for any Democrat...any office...anywhere. The future of our beloved nation is at stake.
