    What's next: Facebook timeline

I am so much more than a cover...

I am a Senior Designer ( working on pretty much anything, from graphic and logo design, to product design, vehicle, industrial design, food design or even interior design). I'm also a real geek and early adopter to everything new, including web and gadgets.

I'm one of the few people who got the Facebook Timeline right away after it was launched, in september 2011. As designer, i immediately saw the potential of the Timeline cover and i decided to find a way to use this opportunity to "express", with creativity who i am......

Most people think designers just make "nice pictures´, while it is actually much more complex, way more complex!

I had to find a way to express the essence of what the design is for me : not only "function + shape", but the sum of all the designer's background, his inner wealth, experiences, universe, feelings :
    - As an artist, when you are creating something, you are giving away a part of you.
    - As a engineer, you have to be sure that this will bring added value and goodness to the user.

As designer i love to give meanings to my work. I also love purity, efficiency and simplicity (among the most difficult thing to create) and efficiency. As a multidisciplinarian i don't want to show "examples", this will put me in a box.

This is why i decided to make it simple as it is : the basic "function+shape" enhanced with me and my background, and all the values i am taking care of.

As i want to link the message, the main visual and my profile picture, i arrange them to be well balanced. I made this profile picture "bigger" than the regular size : this will provide a predominant visual point on the final result, and will bring the "thinking out of the box" which really describes me.

At the end, i just added a short resume and a link. The actual one is a third release of this cover. For some special occasion (new year, special events) i' am creating a ephemeral cover, like for example for 2012 new year's eve (see the link below).

I was really surprised by the success of this cover (about 15.000+ links and website around the world, even some magazines !).

Since the first release there are many people, everyday, asking me how i made it or if i can make them one. I'm running my business so i really can't, and i am saving this for my family or very close friends.

As people keep asking me "how i made it", "how i got the idea", i'm now seriously considering writing a small "how to" to help them.

The advice i can give ? Well keep it simple. Make it with your heart and try to show, as i did, in a simple way what you are doing for a living, how you are doing it or what describes you the best... Facebook Timeline cover is not only the best improvement since Facebook launch, this is also a great opportunity to show in one picture who you are. A visual "business/personal" card.
